Cancelled - Spinning Wheel Maintenence and Repair with David Maxwell, "The Spin Doctor"

  • April 25, 2020
  • 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
  • Scott Manor House, Bedford

--- Cancelled due to Covid 19. The Spin Doctor will be re-booked in the fall ---

Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to run free..

Spinning wheels are seemingly simple machines, but far from trouble-free, (won’t take up, drag fibre in aggressively, drive band jumps off, tension won’t adjust, squeaks/grinds/ rattles/ thumps. And break! Most things can be fixed by yourself; a few need more specialised care. (Broken flyers are the main one here.) The main thing is an understanding of the mechanics of a flyer spinning wheel – what makes it work, (or not).

This workshop will be very casual, driven in large measure by the needs and desires of the participants. David Maxwell, "The Spin Doctor" will bring along an assortment of his own wheels, (mostly antique, double band wheels, but some more modern wheels in need of TLC if they are available at the time), to illustrate maintenance and DIY repairs. But participants are encouraged to bring their own unhappy wheels along as patients for a free, albeit rather public, clinic. (If folk indicate an interest ahead of time, he can also bring along a walking (spindle) wheels, and even a double flyer wheel, and likely a very old Acadian wheel with a Picardie flyer, (if it has not made its way into a museum before that).

Indeed, participants are encouraged to message the good doctor, at
maxwelldm@eastlink.ca , in the lead-up to the workshop with questions, and
expressions of wants, needs and interests, to guide his preparation and subjects.
